article-bond-car-goldfinger-1112The classic Aston Martin DB5 from the 1960’s James Bond era appears in the the latest Bond film “Skyfall” via 3D printing.  The German Based company Voxeljet was contracted by the British Model Maker Propshop to create three 1:3 scale models of the classic roadster.  The beginning of the twenty first century spawned the foundation of 3D printing technology allowing machines to create physical objects through a new digital additive technology.

Unlike current CAD/CAM manufacturing methods using existing materials (like aluminum billet stock) and removing the unwanted material – 3D printing utilizes an additive process by which either plastic or metal is layered to create the desired part.  It is expected that Hollywood will be using the method for model creation going forward.  This expanded use along with other industrial and consumer adoption is expected to lower the cost of ownership and utilization.

This could be huge for business, churches and higher education when it comes to delivering future presentations with great impact. Are you looking at 3D printing for your organization and if so, how are you intending to utilize the technology?
